Who I AM

Advocating for Social Inclusion and Disability Rights in Our Community

I am Chelagat Kipkorir, a development communication specialist and disability advocate living with Retinitis Pigmentosa. My own journey with sight loss has shaped how I see the world—and it has given me a deep commitment to creating spaces where blind and visually impaired young people can belong, be believed, and be bold.
I studied Public Relations at Kenya Methodist University and I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Development Communication at Daystar University. My academic work and my lived experience meet in my advocacy: I design conversations, events, and campaigns that challenge stereotypes about disability and open up honest dialogue about mental health, identity, and inclusion.
I am also the founder of Hope in the Dark Organization, a disability organisation that works with blind and visually impaired youth across Kenya. Through campus forums, storytelling platforms like BlindTalk, and social media engagement, I use my voice—and my story—to remind others that disability is not the end of ambition, love, or leadership. I am still on my own journey of growth, but I am committed to walking it publicly, so that others do not have to walk alone.

my Journey

FROM 1 STEP, the journey continues….

My journey is rooted in lived experience with blindness and visual impairment, and in a deep conviction that young people with disabilities deserve spaces where they are seen, heard, and taken seriously. Over time, this conviction has moved me from simply navigating my own story to actively building platforms where many stories can be told.

I began by strengthening my voice through education. I studied Public Relations at Kenya Methodist University and went on to pursue a Master’s in Development Communication at Daystar University. This combination has allowed me to blend communication skills with a strong understanding of social change, helping me design advocacy that does more than raise awareness – it mobilises people and institutions to act.

As I met more blind and visually impaired young people, it became clear that many of us were facing similar barriers: stigma, limited opportunities, and a lack of platforms to express who we are beyond our disability. In response, I founded Hope in the Dark Organization, a registered disability organisation that supports youth with blindness and visual impairments, fosters inclusion, and defends their rights.

Through Hope in the Dark, my journey has taken me onto various institutions across Kenya. I have organised BlindTalk conversations at various institutions, where students with visual impairments speak openly about resilience, ambition, and everyday life.
Along the way, my advocacy has expanded to include mental health, especially for young professionals with disabilities. I use social media and public dialogues to talk honestly about stress, stigma, and emotional wellbeing, and to encourage others to seek support without shame. My journey is still unfolding, but each step is guided by the same commitment: to turn personal experience into collective empowerment, and to help build a world where we can all live beyond sight.
